This week was spent planning and starting the first part of my final phase project. For my final phase of the project I will be making a time-lapse video of the Lindbergh park. I take this year as the year I matured because I took risks and challenged myself to expand my learning experience. I am going to take a time-lapse of the first park I went to I America with a voice over of me talking about my experience at school and how the brain handles trauma. I spent this week doing research and reading the book My Name Is Malala. I decided to read this book because Malala went through something very difficult and I want to learn more about how she handled it. I had previously read the book but this time I am going to read it to understand how she handled the very traumatic event she went through. By the end of this individual project I will be using it as part of my Transitional Presentation of Learning (TPOL).

This week hasn't been easy for me at all. I was only at school on Tuesday and I wasn't at school for the rest of the week. I was sick for the rest of the week so it was hard for me to be present at school and work on the things I had planned on getting done. It was a very interesting week for me because this week I was able to say I am completely done with phase 1 to 3. The astrophotography picture we took of Lagoon Nebula was stacked and good to be presented. On Tuesday I was at school so I got the chance to start working in my final photo for this project. The main focus of the week was to start working on a proposal that showed an outline of what we want to capture and why. For the last of the project everyone will be doing an independent experiment and we will get the chance to explore something we are interested in. For this phase of the project I am going to learn about how the brain grows and matures. I am going to be doing research about the brain in a traumatic event and why it has a safe place. My final product is going to be a time lapse of the Lindbergh park and a voice over of my experience this year. I chose Lindbergh park because it was the first park I went to in America. To me a park represents a happy place and a safe place.
Camping TripThis camping trip will always be special for me because this is my first ever camping trip. I have had many opportunities to go camping before but I couldn't go because I am sick or to nervous and don't feel comfortable enough to go. I was very hesitant about going on this camping trip because it was for 3 days and I didn't want to leave my mom home alone and I was worried she might get sick again. My mom and brother told me to go and that it would be fun, I would learn something and I needed to try camping. I was surprised by how much fun it was. For me the best part of the trip was getting to take picture of the lagoon nebula and talk to some people I haven't talked to before. Before we went on the camping trip my partners Cielo, Prasanna and I wanted to take picture of the Cave nebula. We did some research to find out the magnitude and the size and what time it would be good to take our picture. We planned on taking the Cave nebula on Monday night around 2-3 am. When we got to the place where the telescopes were set the telescope was set to look at Lagoon nebula. We looked at the Lagoon nebula and decides to do Lagoon instead of cave. We took the chance of saving time and we got a great picture at the end. This week we spent our time working on our camping trip hit list and getting ready. The first step to getting ready for our trip was to figure out what we were going to take picture of and when would be the best time. My partners Cielo, Prasanna and I decided to take a picture of the cave nebula. We learned about the magnitude and the size to get ready. The main focus of the week was Phase 2. For phase 2 everyone got the chance to take a landscape photos that we were happy with. The plan was to print the pictures on a metallic paper and coat the photo with epoxy. Unfortunately everything didn't go as planned. Instead of just sitting around we directed our attention to starting on our next phase which was astrophotography. We also had other assignment for each class. For humanities we were getting ready to complete the introduction part of the book Light and had a discussion about Curiosity and Wondering. In chemistry class we talked about Epoxy. We learned abut why we are using epoxy and how it is helpful. We also got more knowledge on how it works. HumanitiesHumans are driven by curiosity. We as humans have the desire to know and learn about everything around as. There is a saying in Ethiopia that says “ A child brain is pure bright white blank paper”. This saying is important because from the moment we learn to talk we ask questions. The question we ask are not dumb or silly to us. They come from a place of curiosity and wondering about the world and the environment. We have the desire to fill that white paper with answers. The older we get the more we choose what is interesting to us and what is the one thing we have passion for. ChemistryFor our second phase of our project we took landscape pictures. Everyone in the class went to different places to take amazing photos. The different pictures that were taken were taken by the class and needed to be displayed well. The way a photo is framed and displayed is important. Putting epoxy coating on the picture makes the photo look more professional because it looks like glass. the epoxy coat also protects the photo. The epoxy coating is a mixture of epoxy resin and a co-reactor or hardener. An epoxy resin is an adhesive, plastic, paint, or other materials made from a class of synthetic thermosetting polymers containing epoxide groups. For our photos we used a hardener to initiate curing. Hiding In The LightThis week we watched an episode from the documentary series Cosmos: A Space Time Odyssey called Hiding In The Light. In this short documentary we got to learn about the in-depth discovery of light from different scientist that were not scared to ask questions and pursue their curiosity. These scientist were able to look and research to figure out that light moves in a straight line. They were also able to tell that the color of an object can tell the temperature. Looking at temperature they found out about infrared . This scientist all came from different places like German, China or Iran.
This was the first week back from spring break. During the break I was able to take my landscape picture. I had a plan to take a picture of a farm for my landscape photo but unfortunately my mom got sick and had to get surgery. I adjusted my plan so I went to Griffith park instead and took my photo there. After coming back from spring break I was able to print my photo on a metallic paper and mount the picture with Epoxy. During the break some students were able to find a place where we could exhibit some of our pictures and I was excited to see that my picture hanging in liberty market for a week. I felt proud of the fact that I was able to take a good picture and it was good enough to be showcased in a public place. HumanitiesThroughout this phase of the project I have realized that to have a nice landscape picture I have to to take small step to lead me to my final product. I started this part of the project by trying to figure out where I want to take the picture because knowing what kind of picture I want to take I can decide on what kind of light makes the landscape more interesting. Taking a good picture is not enough because it needs to be processed to bring out the color more, fix some things like the noise, lighting, brightness and contrast to make the picture better and the color on the picture pop. The next step was printing the photo onto the metallic printing paper. Processing the picture improves the picture but the metallic paper takes the picture to another level. When it is printed on the metallic paper the colors and the landscape become more defined. The metallic paper sometimes makes the color look more darker and sometimes they look different. The last step is is putting the epoxy coat on the picture. The epoxy coat helps protect the picture like s glass. The epoxy coat on the picture also makes it more crisp and standout. The epoxy is mixed with thinner and slowly applied on the photo. ChemistryTo produce our final we found the step of taking a picture, processing the picture, printing it on a metallic paper and putting epoxy coat on it. Every step in this process is related to light for example let's take the photo and process of editing. While taking the picture we had to think about the lighting and making the picture colorful or making it lead to somewhere. While processing the picture we think about the contrast, brightness, vibrance and saturation and how to make every detail of the picture interesting. We frame our work to protect the picture but it also adds that extra detail to the final product for example to frame our work we glued the metallic paper on wood and then put epoxy coat on top. The epoxy is something that is connected to chemistry and it is something we worked on to make it look good. Exhibiting our photos is the goal because the effort that was put into making it is shown to different types of people. When someone looks at your work you feel that sense of accomplishment because it is something that you created that has stopped a person and take time to look at it.
This week in humanities class we critiqued our writing assignment from last week about a special place. For the writing assignment we used the introduction of the book "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck. This week's main assignment was the Juxtaposition/Dichotomy writing piece. For the writing piece we practiced writing about contrast by choosing a picture of a classmate and talking about the picture. My partner Mahli and I worked on our chemistry projects. We started the first part of the process. HumanitiesFor my Juxtaposition writing piece I chose a picture Cielo took at Mission Beach. My favorite thing about the picture is how the picture was taken because it is very clear to see where one thing begins and ends like the sky. It is also easy to see where the water begins and ends. One of the good qualities about this picture is the timing. By looking at this picture it is easy to see the wave clearly and the crispiness of the wave in the picture because it stands out on its own. The contrast between the wave and the land area is very amazing and I believe the lighting has something to do with that. ChemistryThis week in chemistry me and my partner Mali worked on our independent project. we started by cutting the potatoes into very tiny pieces. We soaked the potatoes in the water to let the starch settle to the bottom. Unfortunately the starch we got from the potatoes wasn't enough to make a magic mud so we decided to leave the water in a jar and let it settle longer. Meanwhile we wanted to see what the texture of the magic mud would be like and what to expect so we used corn starch and tonic water to make a non Newtonian liquid that would glow under a UV light. This week was a very busy week and we also accomplished a lot. We started the week with a demonstration from Andrew. He burned different elements and we got to see the different colors and how we could tell what something is made out of with just the color. This week we started a writing piece in humanities. One of the nice things we did this week was going to an art gallery to look at some landscape photos that were taken by professional photographers. It was a very good experience because we looked at different types of landscape photos from different places. We were also able to watch a video of the journey of two people traveling from the border of Mexico to the Canada border. After watching their journey we had a discussion about the role of exploring in education. HumanitiesThis week we started of by watching a video that had the journey of two people hiking the pacific the pacific coast from Mexico to Canada. We also talked about the role of outdoor experience in education. Our assignment for the week was to write about a special place for us using the introduction to Of Mice and Men as an example. Of Mice and Men Introduction John Steinbeck A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool. On one side of the river the golden foothill slopes curve up to the strong and rocky Gabilan Mountains, but on the valley side the water is lined with trees- willows fresh and green with every spring, carrying in their lower leaf junctures the debris of the winter's flooding; and sycamores with mottled, white, recumbent limbs and branches that arch over the pool. On the sandy bank under the trees the leaves lie deep and so crisp that a lizard makes a great skittering if he runs among them. Rabbits come out of the brush to sit on the sand in the evening, and the damp flats are covered with the night tracks of 'coons, and with the spread pads of dogs from the ranches, and with the split-wedge tracks of deer that come to drink in the dark. There is a path through the willows and among the sycamores, a path beaten hard by boys coming down from the ranches to swim in the deep pool, and beaten hard by tramps who come wearily down from the highway in the evening to jungle-up near water. In front of the low horizontal limb of a giant sycamore there is an ash pile made by many fires; the limb is worn smooth by men who have sat on it. Evening of a hot day started the little wind to moving among the leaves. The shade climbed up the hills toward the top. On the sand banks the rabbits sat as quietly as little gray sculptured stones. And then from the direction of the state highway came the sound of footsteps on crisp sycamore leaves. The rabbits hurried noiselessly for cover. A stilted heron labored up into the air and pounded down river. For a moment the place was lifeless, and then two men emerged from the path and came into the opening by the green pool. When you walk in the door you see a very blue poster that says welcome in a big font and around it is the word welcome written different languages. Finding the word welcome written in your language makes you feel welcomed and safe. To the right of the door there is books for students that can't speak English very well. In front of of the door is a section of computers surrounded with comic books. Behind the comic book is a shelf filled with nature books. If you follow the nature books it leads to teen books like Twilight, Boarder City and many more. Next to those books is a corner, My favorite corner. It is hidden by shelves of books and barely anyone walks by there. It is the best place to read or have a conversation with no disturbance or distractions. Montgomery middle school library, a place where I spent most of my time outside of class. It is the place where I felt safe in the school. Every time I walk in I look at the writing that says welcome in my language. It made me feel like I wasn't an out cast there. ChemistryIn the beginning of the week we talked about light. We did an experiment where we were able to see different colors of fire. Light is a form of energy. Atoms can observe energy and different atoms emit different colors of light. By measuring that light we determine when object is made of without touching it. Since light is wave length, different wave length means different color. That is how we can tell what a planet is made out of by looking at the color. Na= Sodium Na= Light Orange
B=Boron B= Light Green K=Potassium K= Pink/Purple Cu=Copper Cu=Dark Green Sr=Strontium Sr=Strontium Li=Lithium Li=Lithium Mg=Magnesium Mg=Magnisium Fe=Iron Fe= Iron This week we started looking at different types of landscape pictures to get us started for our second phase of the project. While working on getting started we developed pictures and coated more papers in the dark room we made in Andrews class. We also worked on our independent project proposal for chemistry. In humanities we worked on a writing piece for our landscape part of the project. HumanitiesThis is eye catching because of the blue sky and water. At the first glance the tropical feeling with the blue sky and the water sets in . It looks like a place for a vacation where you would relax and spend a very calm and great time. It looks like a great get away, a tropical vacation. The best part of the picture is the water because it leads to another world. Landscape pictures don't have subject most of the time but lead to tropical view to the other side with mountain and snow. The mountain of snow makes you think about of adventure. You think about the adventure of climbing the mountain with the snow and spending some time there. ChemistryIn chemistry we got the chance to work on our chemistry experiment. For our first independent experiment we decided to make a magic mud. For this experiment we will be using starch from potatoes to make a non-Newtonian fluid. If you are interested in knowing you can look at our proposal and plan.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RCdovPxUXiFRvcL_bbUWbzWSk1EHCJhsmZghzhK_VCg/edit This week was one of the hardest weeks for me in school because I wasn't at school for 3 out the 5 school days. I couldn't come to school because I was sick so I didn't know what I had to do. Coming back to school on Friday I was confused and behind on some assignments. Thankfully I was able to talk to my teachers and catch on what was expected of me to do. This week in humanities the focus was the water impact act and chemistry the focus was working on our independent chemistry project proposal. ChemistryOn Monday we did an experiment using citric acid, magnesium ribbon, volume metric flask and balloon. we tried to make a H2 balloon. For this experiment we mixes the citric acid and magnesium with water and we put the balloon on top of the flask. The reaction made the balloon slowly blow up. The liquid inside the flask looked like a soda because it was bubbling up. After a small amount of time I saw that the flask was foggy. The flask was foggy because there was a steam coming from the chemical reaction between the citric acid and the magnesium ribbon. Every time the flask was shook the liquid inside went from a bubble clear liquid to foamy liquid. When the balloon was fully blown up we moved o to the next part of the experiment. We put the balloon next to a fire. When the balloon touched the flames there was an explosion and yellow flames came out. While observing the experiment I had questions like what made the balloon grow bigger, why did the liquid look like soda and why was there an explosion when the balloon touched the fire. HumanitiesIn 2014 40% of the people in flint, Michigan were in poverty. To save money the city switched the water supply. Flint officials saved money by switching from the Detroit water and sewerage department(DWSD) to a new pipeline that the city would build. Before the city started using DWSD as the source of water, the main water source in 1960 was the flint river. So the plan was to go back to using flint river until the new pipeline was built. Residents complained about the water for months. City and state denied the problem for months too. The supply pipes had sustained major corrosion and lead it was too late. The lead in the water affected children and pregnant women. When test where done it showed high lead levels in homes. Flint is found to be in violation of Safe Drinking Water Act. On December 14 the mayor declared state of emergency. Due to the big problem tat rose rapidly, state officials that were responsible resigned and some are going to stand in front of a judge. |
